Food insecurity:

Being without reliable access to affordable, nutritious food.

What could be more important than making sure our community's seniors have enough to eat every day?

They are our parents and grandparents, our teachers and mentors, and in many cases, our country's heroes. They are the ones who watched over us and looked out for us.

They deserve to never have to worry about where their next nutritious meal is coming from. And yet, they do.

It’s a travesty that can result in serious health consequences.

Did you know that food insecure seniors:

  • consume fewer calories and lower quantities of key nutrients
  • are 50% more likely to be diabetic
  • are 60% more likely to have congestive heart failure
  • and are 3 times more likely to suffer depression.

The costs to the healthcare system and society are enormous AND preventable. It costs less to provide a senior with meals for a year than it costs to spend one day in the hospital.

In Orange County, 16,000 residents, 60 and older, face hunger daily.

In Florida 420,000 seniors are food insecure.

Today, many seniors worry about feeding themselves and the problem isn’t going away. By 2050, in less than 30 years, the senior population is expected to double.

That’s why we formed Table Sixty, a collaborative effort created to make sure that seniors in Orange County don’t have to worry about where their next nutritious meal is coming from.

By bringing together our community’s most innovative leaders and committed advocates on the issues of hunger and senior health, we are working to ensure that the number of seniors in our community who are food insecure will one day be…zero.
